By the end of this manual, you will know everything you need to know to easily draw this amazing cartoon dragon and have tons of fun!

How to Draw A Cartoon Dragon

Step 1

Let’s get started with this tutorial on how to draw a cartoon dragon with a dragon head! Real-life reptiles and animals often inspire dragon designs, and this one has a face not unlike that of a crocodile.

You can start this design by drawing some oval shapes for the dragon’s eyes. These have some lines above and below them to add facial expressions.

The dragon’s face is drawn with a few smaller curved lines to give it a more shabby look.

We can draw the mouth in a wavy line to smile at them, and several pointed teeth will sprout from it.

Finally, you can finish by drawing a curved line for the jaw and adding details like the nostrils, horns, and spines on the nape.

Step 2

This second step will add a lot to your cartoon dragon drawing! First, add some round shapes for the pupils in the eyes to complete the face.

Next, draw the uneven lower part of the neck. This will later extend to the dragon’s armoured underbelly, but we won’t be adding that for now.

Next, we will add the dragon wings. These are quite similar to a bat’s wings in that they have a solid structure with leathery parts in between.

When you’re done, draw a curved line for the back and the curly tail. Then go to step 3!

Step 3

For this third step of this guide, we’re going to add some arms and spikes to the dragon’s back.

The arms look a bit like a tyrannosaurus and are quite small compared to the rest of the body.

We’ll make this dragon look more reptilian by adding pointy triangular spikes on its back. That’s all there is to do in this step, so let’s continue.

Step 4

In this fourth step of our tutorial on drawing a cartoon dragon, we will add the rest of the abdomen along with the first hind leg.

The back leg is ruffled and drawn with a rounded line. It also has large pointed nails on the ends of its toes, as shown in the reference image.

For the belly and bottom of the tail, we’re going to draw more of these individual curved sections down from the neck.

When we’re done, we have a few final details that we’ll add to the next step of the guide!

Step 5

You are now ready to finish this kite with some final details! As you can see in our reference image, the other foot is also visible, which is the final look we will add.

This one looks very similar to the other in that it has small toes with large, pointy nails on the ends. Once you’ve added that other foot, you’re ready for more detail!

You can finish the picture in many ways, including drawing a background or some extra details.

There are many fun fantasy backgrounds to choose from, and you can let your imagination run free! What setting options can you think of?

Step 6

It’s time to finish this cartoon dragon drawing with some colours! In our go-to wizard, we have shown you just one of the ways you can colour this cute dragon.

We used a light turquoise blue for most of the body, then went pink for the underside and the leathery parts of the wings.

You can choose these colours, but you should also feel free to be creative as you wish!

There are so many amazing colours that you can choose when completing this picture. Colour choices are only part of the fun, though.
