The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the international standardized test of English language proficiency for native English speakers. IELTS is jointly administered by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English and was established in 1989.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is designed to assess the language proficiency of candidates who are required to study or work in a place where English is the language of communication. In the United Kingdom and other countries, IELTS is required for university entrance.
General IELTS
The general IELTS test is designed for those traveling to English-speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs. It is also required for travel to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The test focuses on the basic skills needed to survive in a social and work environment abroad.
The test consists of four parts:
Listening (about 40 minutes)
Reading (about 60 minutes)
Writing (60 minutes)
Speaking (approximately 15 minutes)
Levels and Grades
Graded. Grades range from 1 to 9. It is possible to obtain half grades, for example, 6.5. Universities usually require an IELTS score of 6 or 7 and may also require a minimum score in all four sections.
IELTS Academic
The IELTS Academic test is designed for applicants for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment. It reflects some of the characteristics of academic language and assesses whether you are ready to embark on further study or vocational training.
Validity of results/assessments: 2 years
Score/value range: 0 to 9 in increments of 0.5.
