Struggling With Fall Allergies? Five Ways to Manage Them

The leaves are changing colors, there’s a chill in the air, and the campfires have once again been lit. It’s a treasured time of year for many, the transition from summer to fall, as the days shorten ever so slightly, and the dress code moves from short-shorts, bikinis, and sun-dresses to cozy sweaters, yoga-pants, and of course denim jackets. It’s also a beautiful time of year, as the leaves slowly switch from green to red and yellow as they fall to the street. However, not everyone gets to enjoy the aesthetics of fall to their fullest. This is because, with all the falling leaves, and the continuous breeze, allergies tend to run rampant. If you’re particularly allergic, the fall season may bring you a bit of dread.

That being said, there’s no reason to panic. There are a plethora of solutions for the allergy-ridden person to prevent, combat, reduce, and alleviate allergy symptoms when they strike. Try any of the following in order to tamper your allergies during the fall season so you too can enjoy late night campfires, and hiking trails full of falling leaves.

1. Over the Counter Allergy Meds

One of the first things to try in the face of allergy season is an over the counter allergy medication. There are a wide variety of allergy meds available to the consumer over the counter and they each have their own pros and cons.

For instance, there are over the counter allergy medications that are specifically for children, while there are others that target a specific area of relief, like a nasal spray for opening up airways, or eye drops to relieve itchy and dry eyes. There are plenty of rankings you can look at that review a wide spectrum of over the counter allergy medications, and which are most suitable for different scenarios.

Perhaps you want an allergy medication that will last you all day long, or one that will help you sleep. Whatever the case, you can find the right over the counter allergy medication for your needs and rely on it to get you through the peak of pollen season during the fall.

2. An Ultrasonic Mist Humidifier

An ultrasonic mist humidifier is another way to relieve allergy symptoms specifically in the household, or the master bedroom. An ultrasonic mist humidifier is a household appliance that is designed to keep the atmosphere moist. This is great for the fall season as the air starts to get a bit dry and harsh. Some humidifiers are even cool-mist humidifiers that are designed to keep the room fresh, moist, and cool, too.

There are even some devices that have a tray made for use with essential oils. This way, you can add your favorite essential oils to the mist which will add a layer of freshness to the mist that smells good and delivers the benefits of whichever essential oils you’ve chosen.

This is a great way to keep your airways open, your room fresh and moist, and to combat airborne bacterias. These machines can be a game changer during the fall season.

3. Prescription Medications

In the same way that people that can look to over the counter allergy medications for relief during the allergy seasons, they can also take this a step further. If you’re struggling with really bad allergies, you may need to seek the advice of a professional physician.

There are stronger medications that doctors can prescribe if needed for your health, and these medications are often a lot more effective at combating allergies. For example, someone may be prescribed an allergy-based-inhaler for serious allergy attacks.

4. Clean Heating Vents

One mistake that a lot of people make in the fall, as temperatures cool down, is to turn on the heat without cleaning any of the vents. There can be a bunch of dust, pollen, and other airborne debris resting in these vents from sitting all year inactive.

Turning the heat on without cleaning these vents can send piles of dust and allergy-irritants into the air of your home. Take a few minutes to clean these vents before turning on your heat and you can avoid blowing dust everywhere into your air.

5. Wash up After Outdoor Work

Another good habit to get into during the fall allergy season is to wash up immediately following any sort of outdoor work or activity. Whether you’re raking leaves, or you’re playing flag-football with your friends; you should throw your clothes in the wash as soon as you get inside.

After throwing your clothes in the wash, you should follow suit and throw yourself in the shower. This way you can wash off any residual pollen on both the clothes and your skin or hair, and avoid bringing it into your home or getting it on your furniture.
