Inverting colors on an image is fun. It usually creates either funny or even scary scenes and portraits and gives you a better understanding of how colors work. Although it looks like an advanced editing technique, inverting colors is quite simple. And the best part, you don’t need fancy expensive software to do that. You don’t even need a computer, as you just use your iPhone.
So, if you’d like to learn how to invert colors on iPhone, keep reading this article. I’ll give you the right tools and knowledge, so you can have as much fun inverting your photos as you like.
Here’s how to invert colors on a picture on iPhone
iCloud Photos has some nice photo-editing options. But inverting colors is not one of them. So, if you want to invert colors on a single image, you’ll have to use a third-party app.
Two of the best photo-editing apps, not just for inverting colors but for doing anything with your photos, are Photoshop Express and Lightroom. Both options are free (although premium plans are available) and easy to use. Also, the whole process is different depending on the app, so you can choose the one that fits your needs better.
I will quickly show you how to achieve what you want in both apps, so you can choose whichever suits you best.
Use Photoshop Express
Photoshop Express is the best app for inverting the colors of photos on your iPhone. It’s the only one I know that specifically has an option for inverting colors. Maybe there are other apps in the App Store, but Photoshop Express is surely the most legit one. The app allows you to invert your photos with just a few taps by applying a special color-inverting filter.
Here’s how to invert the colors of your photos in Photoshop Express:
- Open Photoshop Express.
- Go to Edit and select the photo you want to invert.
- Under the Looks tab, choose Basic.
- Scroll right and tap Invert.
- To save your newly inverted photo, tap the Share button in the upper-right corner and choose Save.
That’s about it. The inverted version of your photo is now in your Library. You can repeat the process for as many photos as you want.
Use Lightroom
Using Photoshop Express is probably the way to go if you just want to quickly invert a few photos. But if you want more control and additional possibilities, you should probably consider using Lightroom instead.

Keep in mind that, unlike Photoshop Express, Lightroom doesn’t have an option to automatically invert your photos. Instead, you’ll have to play with the Curves slider to invert your photos. While this is a less convenient way, it also gives you more freedom in how you want to edit your photos, as you can control the level of inversion, exposure, contrast, etc.
Here’s how to invert the colors of your pictures in Lightroom:
- Open Lightroom.
- Import the photo you want to invert.
- Head over to Light > Curve.
- In the Tone Curve, drag its bottom-left point to the top left, and its top-right point to the bottom right.
- You can also play with other points to adjust exposure, contrast, etc.
- To save your newly inverted photo, tap the Share button in the upper-right corner and choose Export to Camera Roll.
That’s about it. You now know about two methods that I think are the best for inverting the colors of an image on your iPhone. If you want a quick and effective way, you’ll go with Photoshop Express, but if you want more control, you’ll probably go with Lightroom.
